TPV @ the Tarragon!

Toronto Poetry Vendors is very excited to announce that we will soon have a machine installed at the Tarragon Theatre — one of our favourites. Erin and the team at the Tarragon also want to let you all know that they are looking for people to submit “stories of sexual awakenings and memorable moments” as part of a special Postshow Social for this Thursday’s performance of In the Next Room or the vibrator play.

Your stories will be anonymous and read by actors from the play. To submit a story:
1. Send an email to postshowsocial@tarragontheatre.com * or;

2. Leave a voice mail with your story at 416.536.5018 ex 229. (This should be a maximum of 2 minutes long) or;

3. Slip a paper submission into the slot box marked sex stories social, located in the Tarragon lobby at 30 Bridgman Ave.

Plus you can get tickets to Thursday’s show for $10 by including the promotion code ‘social’ at the Tarragon box office, and stick around for the stories afterward. We also hear there’s beer and biscotti.

Thanks to everyone who came out to drop some loonies and turn some dials at Word on the Street in Toronto on Sunday. We had a great time, and are three sunburns and one parking ticket the richer. Who says poetry don’t pay?

Snacks the Traveller hitched a ride back to London with Toronto Poetry Vendorette Carey Toane, who will be waiting with coins at the ready at Culture Days* this Sunday, Oct. 2, at Museum London. Museum books and catalogues will be on sale, and the city’s rare, art and indie booksellers will be on site. There’ll also be workshops and snacks and a zine table manned with local artists to help you get your zine on. Come over between 12 and 4 and say hi!

*Every day is culture day, just sayin’.

TPV is sad to announce we’ve had to cancel our appearance at SuperCrawl in Hamilton tonight due to unforeseen and undeniable vendor illness. Stay tuned for details on Word on the Street in Toronto in September and Museum London in October.

TPV’s Top 30 for fall

This fall is packed with festival action for your favourite travelling paper candy machine, Snacks. First up, he’ll be at SuperCrawl in Hamilton on Saturday, Sept. 10, hanging out on James St. North next to the Barton Street Stage. Crawl by, drop some loonies and say hello — there’ll be poetry readings on that stage starting at 4:45 p.m. and onward into the night. Stay tuned for details on Word on the Street in Toronto in September and Museum London in October.

As a special festival issue, TPV is compiling a greatest hits collection of all 30 Toronto poets who have contributed thus far, from Linda Besner to Zoe Whittall. (For a full list, see our Issues page.) Now’s your chance to stock up on back issues and collect all 30!

Holiday parties and podcasts

The holidays are a time for looking back (among other things), and our spot on CBC Radio’s The Next Chapter with Shelagh Rogers gave TPV the chance to look all the way back to our launch at the beloved and now-defunct This Ain’t the Rosedale Library book store nonpareil in Kensington Market. It was that day in April 2010 that TNC contributor Linda Besner (thanks, Linda!) popped in and asked us some stuff about the project. Now, after months of agonizing suspense (and weekly lurking on the TNC site) you can hear what we had to say (spoiler: I sneak the words “condoms” and “tampons” in there). Bonus: Toronto poet and author Alison Pick is featured on the same podcast.

In other poetry vending news, TPV was in the house last Tuesday when Jason Collett kicked off his fourth-annual Basement Revue at the Dakota Tavern on Ossington. We now have crushes on all the performers that graced the stage, from Collett himself to Julie Fader and Guelph’s Jesse Bell Smith to the all-male literary lineuppers Pasha Malla, David O’Meara, and Ken Babstock. The weekly guests are kept under wrapping paper until the event starts, so we’re looking forward to going back next week to see who’s on the bill.
